NRECA Community Service Project slated for Feb. 13

Class is back in session! GreyStone Power Corporation needs your help as a volunteer at Lithia Springs High School Saturday, Feb. 13.

From 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on that date the school will be the site of this year's national Community Service Project hosted by Touchstone Energy, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, GreyStone and other Georgia electric co-ops. As a Touchstone Energy member cooperative, GreyStone was selected to host the project. The school was selected as the work site due to its opportunities to improve energy efficiency.

Volunteers from co-ops across the nation will participate, with 150 volunteers needed. The event kicks off the NRECA Annual Meeting, which will take place in Atlanta the next week.

No special skills are required. Simple, inexpensive measures will be taken including changing out fluorescent lamps, installing LED exit signs, and switching out incandescent lamps with compact fluorescents. “We will team up to make energy saving improvements to help revitalize the school,” says John Archer, GreyStone Key Accounts Director, who has worked with school system personnel to determine energy efficiency tasks that can be completed on that day. There are tasks for every skill level that will make a difference.

Touchstone Energy Cooperative Project Coordinator Alan Shedd says, "Electric cooperatives have a long history of partnering with schools and giving back to the community. At Touchstone Energy and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, we feel it is important to support education and support energy efficiency. This project ties those two together. It’s co-ops helping co-ops, co-ops helping schools, co-ops helping students to succeed. It is an indication of our continuing allegiance to the seven cooperative principles, which include concern for community and support for education."

A lunch of ribs and chicken will be provided by Planters EMC and sponsored by GreyStone.
