GreyStone gift boosts nature center

The proposed Sweetwater Creek State Park visitors center and museum received a big boost when GreyStone Power Corporation gave $10,000 to the Friends of Sweetwater Creek State Park Nov. 3, 2003.

The $2 million facility is being funded by a $1.5 million grant from the state and a $250,000 grant from the Woodruff Foundation, if a matching $250,000 can be raised locally by Dec. 31.

About $160,000 remains to reach the goal.

“GreyStone is pleased to have a part in the building of this new, state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly facility that has been a dream with Sweetwater Creek State Park supporters for so long,” said Gary A. Miller, GreyStone Power President/CEO. “There is so much history at Sweetwater, and we need to showcase it and protect it for future generations.”

The building has been Gold Certified by the USDA Green Building Council, the only one of its type in Georgia.

Some of the features that will make it environmentally friendly include the recycling of rainwater, low flow toilets and effluent processed and used in an underground drip system for fertilization.

The Friends of Sweetwater Creek have been pursuing the dream of such a visitor center since 1995, when President Bill Cahill visited the Woodruff Foundation to make the group’s first request.
