GreyStone Power helps the Cultural Arts Center cook up a Taste of Douglasville
From gumbo to chicken wings, there was something for everyone at the Taste of Douglasville in May 2004. But one of the event’s sponsors hopes participants get a taste of community, too.
GreyStone Power is a local electric membership cooperative that is owned by its consumers, known as members. Because the community owns the utility, GreyStone sponsors community groups like United Way, the Boys and Girls Club and the Cultural Arts Center (CAC).
“At GreyStone we like to say that we light people’s lives – not just through providing reliable power, but through our support of important community activities and fundraisers like the Taste of Douglasville,” said Tim Williams, GreyStone’s Vice President of Corporate Affairs. “Taste of Douglasville showcases the best aspects of our county. It provides residents with a sense of community pride while creating a great public forum for the arts and giving everyone a taste of what’s available in Douglas County.”
GreyStone Power employees volunteer in several areas across the community, including the CAC. Vice President of Human Resources Marcita Scharnhorst is the president-elect of the CAC Board of Directors, and Director of Communications Vicki Harshbarger is a member of the board. Sharon Jones, a Member Services Representative at the co-op, has been a member of the Douglas County Art Guild for more than a decade and often volunteers for CAC events like Taste of Douglasville.
“Art is very important to a child because it develops their creativity and their sense of self – it makes them an individual. You have to have that, or else you become a machine,” said Ms. Jones. “The CAC helps with that – they arrange art shows for students and keep art flourishing in local schools. I believe their role is critical to the success of our community.”
Funds raised annually through Taste of Douglasville help the CAC continue to reach children and the rest of the community through improving current art programs. Taste of Douglasville rasied $25,000 in 2004 for the arts in Douglas County. For more information on the CAC, visit their web site by clicking here.
