The Washington Youth Tour

Once a year, high school students are selected by the electric cooperatives in Georgia to represent our state as delegates on the Washington Youth Tour. Cooperatives in other states also sponsor delegates, and nationally more than 1,400 students are chosen to participate in the program. GreyStone sponsors six high school juniors from our coverage area to participate in the leadership event each year. The 2010 Washington Youth Tour will be held June 10-17, 2010.

How GreyStone selects participants

Candidates are student leaders chosen by counselors and teachers from participating high schools in the Cooperative’s eight-county service area, including Alexander High School, Arlington Christian School, Chapel Hill High School, Colonial Hills Christian School, Creekside High School, Douglas County High School, East Paulding High School, Harvester Christian Academy, Heirway Christian Academy, Hiram High School, Landmark Christian School, Lithia Christian Academy, North Paulding High School, Paulding County High School, Pebblebrook High School, South Cobb High School, South Paulding High School and Westlake High School.

Each school may nominate up to seven juniors at least 16 years of age to compete for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. GreyStone representatives will begin visiting schools in mid January with winners selected in March. The program is also open to children of GreyStone members interested in the program who excel in academics and demonstrate leadership potential.

Once selected, these students compete for the six GreyStone-sponsored spots on the youth tour. After studying provided materials about GreyStone and the history of rural electrification, participating students take an exam in spring at the Cooperative’s main office. The six students with the highest test scores receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in this life-changing leadership event.

You could join 100 Georgia participants and more than 1,400 students from around the nation – all expenses paid – for one incredible week in our nation’s capital. A fast-paced, up-close, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see with your own eyes the sites and people at the center of our government. If you would like to compete for a spot on the tour and your school is listed above, please let a counselor at your school know you are interested in the program. If your high school is not listed above but is still within GreyStone's coverage area (Douglas, Paulding, Fulton, Carroll, Cobb, Bartow, Coweta or Fayette County) please contact Kizzy Howell at 770-370-2272 to find out how you can get involved in this great program.
