The Washington Youth Tour
Once a year, high school students are selected by the electric cooperatives in Georgia to represent our state as delegates on the Washington Youth Tour. Cooperatives in other states also sponsor delegates, and nationally more than 1,300 students are chosen to participate in the program. GreyStone sponsors six high school juniors from our coverage area to participate in the leadership event each year. The 2008 Washington Youth Tour will be held June 12-19, 2008. Delegates for this year's tour will be selected in March of 2008.
How GreyStone selects participants
Participants are school leaders chosen by counselors and teachers from 14 schools in GreyStone's coverage area, including Hiram High School, Chapel Hill High School, Paulding County High School, Alexander High School, Landmark Christian School, Douglas County High School, Lithia Springs High School, South Cobb High School, Colonial Hill High School, Heirway Christian School, Westlake High School, Arlington Christian School, East Paulding High School and Pebblebrook High School. Each school may nominate up to six high school juniors for the program.
Once selected, these students compete for the six GreyStone-sponsored spots on the youth tour. After studying provided materials about GreyStone and the history of rural electrification, participating students take an exam in spring at the Cooperative’s main office. The six students with the highest test scores receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington DC to participate in this life-changing leadership event.
Next year you could join 92 Georgia participants and more than 1,300 students from around the nation – all expenses paid – for one incredible week in our nation’s capital. A fast-paced, up-close, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see with your own eyes the sites and people at the center of our government. If you would like to compete for a spot on the tour and your school is listed above, please let a counselor at your school know you are interested in the program. If your high school is not listed above but is still within GreyStone's coverage area (Douglas, Paulding, Fulton, Carroll, Cobb, Bartow, Coweta or Fayette County) please contact Vicki Harshbarger at (770) 370.2039 to find out how your school can get involved in this great program.
